Play: "Sittin' In with Clara-Cause I Can't Stand for This Anymore!"
The 2012 Black History Committee of St. John presents the play : “Sittin’ In with Clara-‘Cause I Can’t Stand for This Anymore!” , on Wednesday, February 22ndat 7PM in the Family Life Center. The play is co-sponsored by the Ralph Ellison Library and performed by the Rhythmically Speaking Theater Company. Admission is free and open to the public. The play is the story of OKC Civil Rights Legend and Activist, Mrs. Clara Luper, and the Oklahoma Sit-In Movement from the 1960s. Mrs. Luper graduated from Langston University in 194
4 and earned a Master’s Degree in History from the University of Oklahoma in 1951. She was the first black student admitted into a Graduate History Program. Mrs. Luper taught in the OKC Public Schools System until her retirement in 1991. This seminal civil-rights leader passed away at the age of 88 in 2011, in OKC.
This is one play that you will not want to miss as Rhythmically Speaking brings to life the rich history of the Civil Rights struggle in Oklahoma and the invaluable contributions of Mrs. Clara Mae Shepard Luper.
